This Internal Tool was a legacy backend application built on outdated technology. It was slow, cluttered, and difficult for agents to use. At the same time, the business was undergoing a digital transformation, migrating tools into modern frameworks like React. This meant the redesign needed to both solve user pain points and fit within tight timelines and technical constraints.

I collaborated closely with developers to ensure the design was feasible under the new framework and could be delivered within the organization’s transition window.

Research & Discovery

  • Interviewed 8 users across different geographies, roles, ages, and tenures to capture a wide perspective.

  • Found recurring pain points: endless scrolling, inconsistent grouping of fields, difficulty tracking workflow progress.

  • Conducted card sorting exercises with users to organize fields and actions into intuitive categories, forming the backbone of the new tab structure.

Design Approach

  • Introduced a side navigation bar so users could jump directly to major sections (Header, Packages, Selects, Summary) instead of scrolling endlessly.

  • Applied tabbed layouts and collapsible panels to reduce visual clutter and make the workflow easier to follow.

  • Prototyped multiple scenarios and validated them through usability testing, ensuring alignment with users’ mental models.

  • Balanced technical feasibility by working alongside developers to adapt flows into React, making sure designs respected backend dependencies and system limits.

Redesign Outcomes
Before: A rigid, form-heavy tool requiring scrolling back and forth.
After:

  • Side navigation enabled instant section switching.

  • Card-sorting-informed categories clarified field grouping.

  • Collapsible panels streamlined dense information (like pricing and imprints).

  • A modular React-based interface that was faster and future-ready.

Key Takeaways

  • Delivered a critical redesign under strict time and technical constraints.

  • Balanced legacy migration requirements with user-centered design improvements.

  • Prototyped quickly and iteratively to validate ideas with users early, ensuring the redesign fit their mental models.

  • Demonstrated the power of small structural changes (side nav, tabs, collapsibles) in creating major efficiency gains.

  • Reinforced collaboration with developers and stakeholders, ensuring design decisions were both user-friendly and technically feasible.
